Chef is an individual whose profession is cooking. He is hired to cook in a professional manner in private homes or business organizations. Traditionally it refers to exceedingly trained individuals who are expert in all phases of meal preparations. Chefs usually take responsibility of deciding menus, supervising cooks, taking care of the supplies and store room apart from providing a capable leadership. Chefs are generally promoted to this role or appointed after much experience in the related field. Cooks and chefs are required for restaurants, hotels, ships, military, guest houses, hospitals, nursing homes, canteens and kitchen of V.I.P.s. Thus we find that there is requirement of chefs and cooks in vast numbers. The ideal candidate should have diploma, associate or bachelor degree in culinary arts. These educational programs can take one to four years depending on the level of education. Ideally a person wishing to apply for the post of chef should have taken Hotel Management (HM) training from a reputed institution. The selected candidate will be responsible for kitchen operations and upkeep. He would be participating in the setting up of kitchen, supply, enrollment of assistant cooks and others. The work environment, restaurant and other food service facilities where the cooks and chefs are employed are required to be clean and sanitary. Chefs have to follow a specific time table of cooking food while at the same time maintaining quality and observing safety and sanitation guidelines. The salary of a chef varies drastically according to their qualification, experience and culinary skills and according to their place of work. For a medium class restaurant it could be between Rs.20,000/- to Rs.30,000/- per month and for a 5-star hotel their salary could be over Rs. 100,000/- per month.
